York Container Lift Description

This York Container Lift is a single pillar machine with a Safe Working Load of 300 Kgs and a lift height adjustable between 816 & 880mm. The lifting platform was 705 x 1050mm to allow a York to be wheeled on at the ground level and will align with a gravity ramp at the upper level. The lift platform was tilted to an angle of 4.5 degrees via a tipping cam arrangement at the full up position to initiate the York container rolling off the lift platform. At the full down position, the platform was horizontal and approximately 10mm above the floor with a small ramp to assist loading. The York Container Lift is constructed from Grade 304 stainless steel and is bolted to the floor without the need for a pit. Lifting with the York Container Lift is accomplished via a chain driven by a motor gearbox mounted at the top of the main column.

Safety Guard to PD 5304 Safety of Machinery

The safety guard is constructed from 40 x 40 x 3mm stainless steel box section and 2mm stainless steel sheet to meet the guidelines of PD 5304 Safety of Machinery. The guard reached to a height of 2200mm above the floor level, with a pair of hinged doors at the loading position through which the York Container Lift was loaded and unloaded. The doors were electrically and mechanically interlocked to prevent the York Container Lift being operated with either door open. The doors could only be opened when the lifting carriage was at the full down position. The aperture at the exit position from the safety guard was guarded using a Datasense Safety Light Barrier.

Guarded Machine Electrical Control

The York Container Lift was fitted with an IP65 Control Panel mounted on the main column. There was also a remote push button station on a flying lead incorporating the following controls; Start, Reset, Guard Release and Emergency Stop. The York Container Lift operation was as follows:-

  • The York Container was loaded into the York Container Lift where it was detected by a proximity sensor and the Guard Doors was closed
  • Once a York was loaded correctly and the guard gate was closed, a ‘Green’ indicator illuminated to show that the system was ready
  • The lift operated on a latched principle and once the Start button was pressed, it rose to the full up position limit switch and stopped
  • At this position the lift platform was inclined 4.5 degrees and the York automatically exited onto the gravity ramp
  • The was a safety light barrier at the exit position to prevent any access to the working York Container Lift during normal operation
  • Once the York Container has exited the York Container Lift safely, the lift carriage returned to the full down position
  • The guard gate interlock switch was now released via a ‘Guard Release’ push button
  • The York Container Lift was then loaded with a full York container and the whole cycle repeated

Safety Features of this System

There are a substantial amount of safety features built into this equipment that ensure a safe system of operation, these include:-

  • The whole York Container Tipper is contained within a Safety Guard that conforms to the PD 5304 Safety of Machinery Specification
  • The Guard gates are electrically and mechanically interlocked to ensure that there can never be access beneath the York Container when it is raised
  • The machine structure is subjected to Independent Examination using Autodesk Inventer Professional Stress Analysis Software that ensures that no part of the machine is subjected to excessive loading or stress
  • The lifting chain Safe Working Load is approximately 12 times the rated Safe Working Load of the machine
  • The tipper control system is built to a minimum of Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 2 and includes a Safety Monitoring Relay
  • The machine is subjected to a Safe Working Load Test at our factory with the test load being in excess of the Safe Working Load by 25%
  • The Lift control is fitted with an Emergency Stop Button that will stop the machine instantly if required

York Container Lift Application Story

This York Container Lift was required to elevate a York Container onto a Gravity Ramp which would then transfer under gravity to the bottom of the ramp. This prevented operators from having to walk backwards and forwards continuously collecting York Containers. The York Container Lift had a ‘Z’ loading configuration so that the Trolley was loaded at the front and unloaded at the back of the York Container Lift at the upper level. The York Container Lift was mounted on an existing floor and does not require a pit to be created with the requisite drainage issues.
