ATEX Drum Hoist Description
This ATEX Drum Hoist is a single pillar post hoist that was designed to elevate
a Steel Drum (464mm Diameter x 827mm High) to a height of approximately 2800mm before
tipping it gradually through an angle of 50 degrees. The ATEX Drum Hoist was constructed
from Grade 304 stainless steel and was bolted to the floor. Lifting with the ATEX
Drum Hoist was accomplished by the rotation of a precision ball screw contained
within the main column. The motor was a pneumatic air motor complete with a braking
system so that when the air supply was removed the raised carriage is stopped immediately.
The drum was loaded at an angle of 10 degrees giving a total angle of the drum in
the fully tipped position of 60 degrees. The drum was loaded at the ground floor
and retained into the formed lift carriage by a retaining bar and toggle latch.
As the drum approaches its full up position, it was tipped over using a mechanical
cam to a total angle of 60 degrees. At the full up position, an end of travel pneumatic
limit switch stops the lift carriage with a second end of travel pneumatic limit
at the full down position.
The ATEX Drum Hoist was manufactured from Grade 304 Stainless Steel throughout and
the finish was suitable for use in a pharmaceutical environment. The surface finish
was a fine polish which is often referred to as Dull Polish or 180 Grit and the
ATEX Drum Hoist has a Safe Working Load of 100 Kgs. The area in which this ATEX
Drum Hoist was installed, was an ATEX Zone 1/21 IIC T4 area and all components and
materials used and the design of the ATEX Drum Hoist conformed to the requirements
of this ATEX Classification.
Pneumatic Control System
The Pneumatic Control System for this ATEX Drum Hoist was mounted in a Stainless
Steel Enclosure fixed to the main column. The ATEX Drum Hoist can be operated in
both directions from the control panel using dual push buttons which must be held
for the machine to move. The control panel incorporated the use of air pilot operated
ATEX valves to control the lifting operations. The limit switches were pneumatically
operated, to detect 'Full Up' and 'Full Down' positions. All pneumatic tubing was
antistatic and suitable earth bonding points were present.
Stainless Steel Infeed Gravity Roller Track & Ramp
In front of the ATEX Drum Hoist lift carriage there was a 500mm long x 600mm wide
length of stainless steel gravity roller track, 125mm high. The rollers were 50mm
diameter with sealed bearings and the base frame was from 40 x 40mm angle.
